Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) attends the funeral of Alan Conway (Conleth Hill) – and joins the dots between his fictional creations and the real world at considerable risk to herself – in Anthony Horowitz’s spry, intelligent adaptation of his own whodunit.

The solid Danish thriller nudges criminal profiler Louise Bergstein (Natalie Madueño) further out of her depth for this double bill as she infiltrates a commune, hoping to learn more about its creepily credible leader. It’s Earth Day today, so here are three hours of natural marvels from the titular reef off Western Australia, depicting rays, fossils and whales, as well as the efforts to preserve their beauty in the face of devastating climate change. The aftermath, too, proved almost as significant, as a debate over funding restoration led Buckingham Palace to take a huge step towards modernisation and transparency. Like every good disaster movie, the film tracks the origins and rapid spread of the blaze, as well as the successful strategies deployed to contain and eventually put out the fire, with contemporary footage making clear the considerable risks and calculated gambles taken. This was testament to the many firefighters attending the scene (their Herculean efforts are now commemorated in the restored chapel’s stained glass), and director Stuart Strickson talks to several of them in this forensic, serious-minded documentary which, with its absence of prurient scuttlebutt, attracts a better class of contributor than many of the royal documentaries currently clogging the schedules. The event that set the seal on the Queen’s “annus horriblis” of 1992, the fire at Windsor Castle was devastating but could have been so much worse: no lives were lost and hundreds of artworks were saved, from priceless porcelain and portraits to carpets.
